St. Benedict News staff geared up Monday for its first major news event of the school year.
Staffers from the St. Benedict News grabbed their notebooks and smartphones to cover an eclipse-watching event sponsored by St. Benedict Prep's Science Department.
As the smell of grilled hamburgers and hotdogs wafted through the air, hundreds of students glimpsed through safety glasses, taking in a rare coast-to-coast solar eclipse. The student journalists observed and interviewed dozens at the crowded event. They took in the emotional reaction experienced by many as they watched the moon seem to eat away at the surface of the sun as if it were a cookie and then reverse the process.
Obervers also viewed the rare astronomical event via pinhole projectors constructed by faculty as well as through a specially adapted telescope.
Below are some St. Benedict News staffers, Esteban Lema (at left) and Yannie Lopez on the scene.
Here's a brief video of photos taken by me capturing the exuberance of the event.
